The Tantric Path

...generate this subtle level of consciousness, must eliminate the agitation of the coarse level of conceptual thought.

Where can be found the practices of the coarse and subtle levels of consciousness that counteract delusion by means of undivided method and wisdom ? This leads to the subject of the Buddhist tantras.

According to the Tantra of the Two Forms (of the Hevajra cycle), there are four classes of tantra: kriya, charya, yoga, and anuttarayoga. Kalachakra belongs to the last of these four.

In the three lower tantra classes one generates a coarse consciousness combining method and wisdom, and then meditates on emptiness.

The yogic techniques for engaging the powerful, subtle levels of consciousness focused in meditation born from the inseparability of method and wisdom are found only in the texts of highest yoga tantra.

To generate this subtle level of consciousness one must first eliminate the agitation of the coarse level of conceptual thought. Many methods for effecting this end have been taught.

One such method found in the highest yoga tantras involves arresting the deceptive projections of conceptual thought by means of channeling the vital energies of the nervous system. In a second method one cuts off the movements of conceptual thought and engages in totally non-conceptual meditation in order to eliminate the elements that distort the mind.
