Here I will speak briefly about the meditative techniques found in the Kalachakra system, which belongs to the highest yoga tantra class. It is a tantric system with several unique characteristics. Generally, highest yoga tantra systems are of two types: "buried tantras" such as Guhyasamaja, and "clear tantras" such as Kalachakra. The difference between these two styles appears in the fourth initiation. In the buried tantras the fourth initiation is revealed in a very concealed or hidden manner, whereas in the clear tantras it is presented openly.
Although basically all the individual systems found in the highest yoga tantras are equally profound, they each have their own approach which renders them more effective as a practice in accordance with the specific nature of the individual practitioners, their karmic tendencies and so forth. If one practices the highest yoga tantra system more appropriate to one's personal situation, the effect will be far more powerful than meditating on any other system of the same tantra class. It is important that the practitioner engages in the system most suited to him or her. To demonstrate this metaphorically, a sick person takes a medicine appropriate to the specific illness and to the general condition of his or her being. In the same way, all systems in the highest yoga tantras are equally powerful, but a difference between them appears in their application to the physical, psychic and karmic situation of the individual practitioner. This is obvious from the different ways in which people experience the manifestations of the subtle consciousness and energies, such as in the visions of smoke and so forth at the time of death. The yogic path of Kalachakra provides a very special method for those who have the correct body, mind and karmic predispositions. These special qualities become apparent after one has completed the imagined generation stage yogas and engages in the unfeigned completion stage practices. Here again the Kalachakra system reveals a unique presentation of the six yogas that constitute the completion stage. In the discussion of the Kalachakra generation stage yogas, which ripen and mature the mind for the completion stage, it is traditional to introduce the topic of the three Kalachakras: outer, inner and alternative. Outer Kalachakra is comprised of the elements of the universe in which we live. Inner Kalachakra is the psychophysical aggregates, the sensory and psychic capacities of the living being, and so forth. Thirdly, alternative Kalachakra is the path of the generation and completion stage yogas, the yogic methods that have the power to purify the above two Kalachakras. Outer Kalachakra is generally explained in the context of this universe. Then when one meditates on the mandala, inner Kalachakra is seen as the body, faces, hands, feet, and so forth (of the Kalachakra and Consort), as well as all the surrounding deities of the mandala, conceived as symbols of the starts, planets, constellations and so forth. From this we can know that Kalachakra has a special connection with all the living beings of this world system.
